TFT Placement Matches Explained (Set 17, 2026)

Every new set, your rank does not start from scratch and it does not carry over exactly either. TFT uses a soft reset plus a short run of placement, or provisional, matches to seat you at a starting rank. Here is how those games work, how your starting point is decided, and how to make them count.

How Placement Matches Work

When a new set begins, you play 5 provisional matches. The key detail: you do not lose LP for a bottom 4 finish in these first games, while the system reads your results and places you. After the provisional run, normal LP gains and losses kick in and you climb from there.

How Your Starting Rank Is Decided

Your starting point is a soft reset of your previous set's rank, landing somewhere between Iron II and Silver IV. A higher previous rank starts you higher in that band. Your provisional results then nudge you toward where the system thinks you belong, so strong early games seat you higher.

New Players and First-Time Placements

If you have never played ranked, your provisional matches are your first taste of the ladder. Play them like real ranked games, since they set the baseline you climb from for the rest of the set.

How to Make Placements Count

Play your most comfortable, consistent comps during provisionals rather than experimenting. Top 4 results seat you higher and save you the grind back up later. If you want the cleanest possible start, a TFT placement boost runs your provisionals for strong finishes, a TFT rank boost takes you to a target tier from there, or browse all TFT boosting services.
